Susan's Story

Susan lost 41 inches and 46 pounds of fat while gaining 15 pounds of muscle in 12 weeks!!

"Have you seen Susan Douglas lately?" - my neighbor asked the other day while I was out walking. "You sound like her - but you sure don't look like the old Susan I know! Where are you hiding her?" Ten weeks ago, little did I know how wonderful I would look and feel today. I feel like Cinderella when the fairy Godmother waved her magic wand and transformed her to a princess! When I saw Angela's transformation contest flyer, the competitive and optimistic part of me said I could do this ... lose all this extra weight and look really great in 12 weeks. My husband however didn't share my optimism. He had watched me (now 44 years old and three children later) struggle through numerous weight loss programs and exercise regimens He encouraged me and baby-sat the kids so I could go to weigh-in meetings and play tennis weekly. He watched me be sort-of successful, going from a large pear to a slightly smaller pear.... but still seriously overweight and out of shape. My weight came on gradually ... 10 years of gaining a few pounds here and there. Not much each year but it added up to over 100 pounds in 10 years! I am a Computer Programmer - sitting 8 hours a day. I ate super-sized meals on the run from fast food restaurants as I was always driving some child somewhere for something when I wasn't working. I rarely had time to cook a healthy meal. I was good at sampling office "treats", cleaning my children's plates, and eating a bowl of buttered popcorn at the movies! Diet soda + anything = 0 calories ... right? My aerobic exercise routine consisted of hanging the "Taxi" sign on my van, walking to the kitchen, arm curls with potato chips (my favorite food), and an occasional tennis game. My wake-up call came with my mother's heart attack and death at age 57 . She had been obese and I was following in her footsteps. I was devastated, she was my best friend. I wanted to make sure I would be around to love my children and see them grow up. I wanted to grow old with the love of my life - my husband. I needed to be a good role model for all of them - eat healthily and exercise regularly. I also wanted to improve my tennis game. I didn't have the muscular control I'd had when I played tennis in high school. I couldn't keep up with my friends who were younger and/or in better physical condition. Being a very competitive person, this was quite frustrating to me! At my first weight training session - I relied on my trainer to help me set my goals. I thought he was being overly optimistic and not very realistic. I even told him so! But I agreed to do my best and follow all of his instructions, secretly hoping he was right! My trainer found long lost muscle groups. I was sore and wanted to quit!!! I wondered if I had made the wrong choice to start weight training. My trainer assured me the soreness was only temporary and stressed the importance of stretching several times a day (along with a little Icy Hot and Tylenol), especially before bedtime - to help alleviate the soreness. It worked! :-) Yes, I had made the right choice. I started looking forward to the next session. My trainer taught me the importance of eating 6 small nutritional meals daily and drinking a gallon of water daily. His personalization of my weight training program focused on me and my abilities whereas the classes I had previously attended never successfully challenged me to extend my abilities. Before when I got tired, I stopped. No one noticed or cared if I was doing the exercise correctly. My trainer patiently taught me the importance of training "properly" and the difference it made. My trainer challenged me each and every session, pushed me farther than I thought I could go; always encouraging me to give him just a few more repetitions. The gradual increase showed me I could extend my abilities and increase my stamina. Each small success was a victory that built my confidence and allowed me to go even further. I saw and felt the results. I started feeling really good after working out! About 6 weeks after I started with Angela's Program, I fell and broke my left arm. My first thought was I'd have to stop weight training. I was finally doing so well and didn't want to quit! With my Doctor's approval, my trainer adapted my program successfully and I continued working out and seeing extraordinary results! At 10 weeks (over 25 pounds, 27 1/2", and 7% body fat less) - I feel GREAT! I am finally wearing a size 16 dress! My husband can't believe the difference! The weight training in combination with my new healthy nutritional eating habits and regular cardiovascular exercise has transformed me!! I have gone from a size 24/26 to a size 16. I am walking 2 miles a day and attending an aerobic exercise class 2/3 times a week. I can even run up two flights of stairs at work! I feel great! My tennis serve is awesome! I can't wait to weigh in at 12 weeks to see how much more I have lost. My ultimate goal is be a size 8 . Angela's program has changed my thought process. I no longer am settling for less than I can be and giving up! It is no longer "IF " I get there, but just a matter of time and training. I'm looking forward to wearing a bikini this summer for the first time in 25 years. To my husband - thank you for all your help and support! . To my Dad - thanks for the new clothes! To my friends-thanks for the daily encouragement! Anyone have some "hand-me-downs" in a sizes 14 or smaller I can borrow on my way to an 8? I'd really like some short skirts and dresses to show off my legs! To Angela ... you have taught me life long as well as life saving lessons. Without your expertise, experience and encouragement I wouldn't be on the path to achieving my dream to look, feel and be healthier. From my family and me ... Thank you for making me as beautiful on the outside as God has made me on the inside!
