Get Real JUICED!

If you're anything like me, you've got a certain activity that you do that frees your mind to wander and to imagine all of the wonderful possibilities that exist for your life's calling. For me, as you might imagine, it's my elliptical machine. When-ever I'm on it I've got the remote control in one hand, and I flip through all of the really good information out there, like the Discovery Channel or the interesting infomercials. On this particular day, I happened upon an infomercial where I was introduced to Jack Lalane and his new juicer. I was intrigued so I watched on.

As you know, I preach exercise and balance and good food--namely whole foods as I believe that the foods that God made available to us on the planet are generally good for us, and that the more that man gets involved with it, the less good for us it is!

Take the current obesity epidemic. I can explain it all with three very easily-recognizable words…highly processed foods. That's it. We were a healthy nation, some of us a bit overweight, but we never got into the amount of trouble that has recently been highlighted until we became a "low-fat" nation. What are our favorite low-fat foods? Pasta, pretzels, the ever-loving sandwich, breakfast cereals and the like. And what do they all have in common? White flour. Pounded, pulverized, "enriched" flour. Man has gotten COMPLETELY involved with the little wheat grain and has made it something that has absolutely no nutritional value to speak of--so badly in fact that they have to add nutrients back in. That's what enriched means. If it's enriched, it's bad for you--period.

Add to that all of the donuts, burgers, ice cream, candy, and the other mostly-nutrient-poor items that we like to think of as food, as it's no wonder we are all fat.

My job is really easy. I try to get people to replace some of their highly-processed foods to mostly-whole foods while getting them to move their bodies a little bit by exercising, and voila, their body fat drops rapidly and consistently over time. It's pretty easy. I've done it over and over and over, and my clients tell you all about it on my web site, The Body Sculptress, http://www.thebodysculptress.com.

So, now that you know who I am and understand my basic fitness philosophy, you can imagine how excited I was to consider that a juicer might produce really great-tasting beverages from VEGETABLES!!! Wow! If that were true, I could really add to the quality of life of a LOT of people. On top of that it was suggested that the pulp which gets deposited into its own container can be used for breads and sauces, etc. I was really excited about that possibility as I really love bread, but don't eat it very often because of it's high glycemic value. If I could get some really great vegetable pulp recipes for desserts, breads and other delicious and hard-to-find-healthy items, I could REALLY get some folks excited!

I was motivated to get that juicer. Mr. Lalane had sold me on it. While I was riding that elliptical machine, I got hotter and hotter. My legs really started pumping! I was so excited I think I burned over 700 calories. That's hard to do! I was working it because Lalane was so inspirational and the drinks and other foods looked fabulous! You could put large pieces of food into it, it ran quietly, it was easily disassembled for cleaning, and the juice and pulp spilled out of separate areas. I wanted it!

However when I went to my favorite search engine, google.com and searched, I found other sites that rated all of the juicers, and I was surprised to find that Lalane's juicer didn't do as well as another one--namely The Juiceman II Juicer! Here's what I did after I received the Juiceman II. I went right out and bought 2 other books -- The Juicing Bible by Pat Crocker, Susan Eagles and RAW by Juliano Brotman and Erika Lenkert.

If I was going to improve my life and help others improve theirs, I wanted all the information I could get to build a really outstanding favorite recipe list, and these two books did it for me. I'm sure they are going to please you, too.

The first thing I did when I got home was to open The Juicing Bible by Pat Crocker and Susan Eagles and read it. I flipped back and forth in the "Health Conditions and Healing Foods" section until I found ONE recipe that seemed to have many healing properties for some of the things that Michael and I complain about. It was also important to me to stick to the Vegetable chapter, as I didn't want to add to my sugar base by making fruit juices. I wanted to improve my health by making vegetable consumption easier and more enjoyable. The recipe I chose for us was the "Leafy Greens" recipe. I was hoping it was going to be something "gingered" but there would be time enough for that.

Here's the Leafy Greens recipe:

4 spinach leaves, washed
2 kale leaves, washed
1 beet (with top), scrubbed
2 stalks celery, washed
1 apple, washed

Using the juicer, process everything and pour into the glass.

I was surprised! I liked it. It tasted a little bit too "green" though and I figured out with 2-3 more tests that it was the Kale. I reduced the Kale to 1 leaf and it was much better. Then I added a little salt and pepper, and it WAS FABULOUS!!

Since then, I haven't bought any more Kale. We've substituted 5 baby carrots for the Kale and IT'S EVEN BETTER! We love it. I can drink it all day long. It's literally like a treat--it's so good. I can't believe how good it is! I'm sure you will love it, or one of the other 50 vegetable juice recipes in the book. We're still trying all of them. We like some more than others, but we really love some. I'm sure you will, too! And those conditions we were "treating…" Well, we believe they are better! We know for a fact that as we continue this for the rest of our lives, they can't help BUT BE better!

In addition to sections for teas, bitters, smoothies and more, there is a section on "Roughies." This is the section where you make real food from the juices. Apple-Rice Pudding, Avocado Gazpacho, salads, salsas, sauces, marinades and breads like Thyme-Pumpkin Bread!

Okay, how about a great recipe from the RAW book by Juliano Brotman and Erika Lenkert cookbook.

Living Buckwheat Pizza Crust:

1 1/2 cups sprouted buckwheat groats
1/4 olive oil
spices and herbs to taste
2/3 cup carrot pulp
2/3 cup soaked flax seeds

Put the groats in a mixing bowl, dribble the olive oil over them, add carrot pulp and flax seeds. Mix. Then scoop the groats, in batches, into a food processor. Coat a dehydrator sheet or cookie sheet with oil and scoop big scoops of the dough onto it. Smooth the dough to form a 10" x 10" square that is 1/4 to 1/2 " deep. Dehydrate in either the dehydrator or oven at 99 degrees for 7 or 8 hours.

The really great thing about the RAW by Juliano Brotman and Erika Lenkert book is that it complements the juice recipes. The chef uses a lot of pulp and juices in his recipes, which by the way, look, taste and ARE fabulous!

Other recipes are Portobello Nigiri, Cole Slaw, Fried Rice, Humus a' l'Orange, Banana Fingers, Curried Pate', Lentil Soup, Cashew Butter Cookies, Carob Mousse and more!

Here's how I'm using it to get more vegetables in our daily meal plan:

Meal 1: Chocolate pancakes and mashed strawberries

Meal 2: Natural PB and mashed berries on Organic whole grain bread
1 scoop whey with juiced fruit of some sort in a blended shake

Meal 3: Soy marinated chicken and cole slaw

Meal 4: "Leafy Greens" and a 4 egg white veggie omelet

Meal 5: Tilapia, green beans and whole grain brown rice with salsa

Meal 6: 2 slices of "Living Buckwheat Pizza" with juiced tomato sauce

Let me just mention quickly that I was also delighted to find out that e-Diets.com (select Angela Ursprung) includes recipes for use with juicers! My own membership pulled up a couple of "juiced" recipes and I was so psyched to be able to use it with them!

So I used the Juiceman II Juicer for lots of things and I've been having a ball discovering all of the ways I can use it, but how does it actually work? Well, it comes apart in 2 twists--that's it. And it cleans like a dream. Even with embedded beets and carrots, it just rinses away. And it's QUIET! And powerful. It's truly everything it's advertised to be. We love it. We line the pulp bin with a baggie and replace it each night as we're doing our two twists to get it apart for it's nightly rinse. Then we twist it right back together. It's very easy.
