Rollerblading For Weight Loss

By The Body Sculptress

Published: June 2004

RALEIGH. Michael and I just got back from a much-needed break at Wrightsville Beach, NC, USA, and it was so much fun! You see, there are basically two types of people. There are those who see vacation as an excuse not to have to exercise, and then there are those who see vacation as an opportunity to get more exercise in. Guess which one I am? And my sweet husband puts up with me and always appreciates the amount of activity we are able to fit in at the end of the day.

So I brought our blades with us just in case we might find somewhere to use them. That's usually a tough call as being upright on skates at our age can be very dangerous and rollerblading in Raleigh, NC is a down-hill challenge -- literally! I have scars on my rear-end to prove it. Any little hill is absolutely treacherous, and Raleigh, NC is absolutely filled with little hills.

Wrightsville Beach, NC, however is not. It is a lovely little island just outside of Wilmington, NC (where television programs like "One Tree Hill" are filmed), and it is surrounded by the intercoastal waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. It is absolutely beautiful -- AND it is rollerblade heaven.

What constitutes "rollerblade heaven?" In short this beautiful island, between "Jerry's Market" and "Shell Island" is:

  • A long, straight, flat, wide road which has the intercoastal on one side and the ocean on the other with beautiful beach houses and wetland all around
  • Slow-moving motorists who are used to and are patient with pedestrians
  • Very little traffic
  • Beautiful scenery
  • A beach community (means you can wear your bathing suit and get some sun while you are at it)
  • Very little other pedestrian traffic (everyone else uses the "municiple loop")

Each morning after eating breakfast on a rocking chair overlooking the intercoastal waterway, Michael and I strapped on our skates and took off down the 4 mile roadway to "Shell Island" and back. It was a 60-90 minute journey, one that worked us without draining us and one that burned some fat while sunning our shoulders. It was my absolute favorite part of the whole vacation and I can't wait to go back.

So if you're looking for a great place to rollerblade, remember Wrightsville Beach, NC. It is, without a doubt, worth whatever time you can spend there.

The Six Foundations of Healing

By, Daniel H. Chong, ND

Illness, acute or chronic, is a multi-faceted event. Even a simple cold needs more than one condition in place in order for it to occur. You must do more than simply come into contact with a virus. If contact with a cold virus was all you needed to do to catch one, everyone would have colds all the time, as cold viruses are ubiquitous in our environment. In addition to viral exposure, your bodily terrain must be a place that a virus is able to overrun, meaning a place that is worn out from stress or fatigue; a place that does not have the level of nutrients available to it from a good whole foods diet to be able to fight off a virus; a place that simply can no longer resist disease.

The same conditions and often more must be met for chronic disease to develop, but they must be in place for much longer. If this is true of the nature of disease, why would healing be any different? If numerous conditions must be met in order for acute or chronic illness to occur in your body, why wouldn’t numerous conditions need to be met in order to heal?

Six Fundamental Areas

There are six fundamental areas I believe must be addressed in order to heal from a chronic condition. I call them the six foundations of healing. These areas are nutrition, detoxification, structure, genetics, thoughts & emotions, and spiritual health. Sometimes only one or two of these areas may be involved, but more often than not, they all affect the illness on some level or another. If these areas are not investigated and subsequently treated, if necessary, the illness will likely linger.

A typical conventional medical approach addresses none of these areas, but instead focuses on identifying and suppressing symptoms, often with powerful drugs or surgery. Both of these treatments can be dangerous and may potentially add to the level of stress the body is under. This can, in turn, compound the original problem at some point later on. The only healing that occurs in cases where extensive drugs or surgery are used tends to happen in spite of these treatments, not because of them.

  • Nutrition
  • Detoxification
  • Structure
  • Genetics
  • Thoughts and Emotions
  • Spiritual Health

If you give the devil place, he will take it. You have to stay alert and keep your shield of faith high because if you don't, he'll turn around and steal back from you the ground you just took.

There have been people who have received their healing and have fallen back into their old thinking patterns of sickness. They let their faith down and gave the devil an opening. When he came along with an old symptom, they weren't ready for him. They fell victim to his counterattack.

You can stand successfully against the devil's strategies! But before you do, you're going to have to make three quality decisions.

First, you must make the Word of God the final authority in your life. Line up your thinking with whatever the Word says.

Next, you must decide to live your life by faith in what God has said. The Bible says, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."

Finally, you must decide to live by the love of God because faith works by love. Without love, your faith won't function. Without the Word, you can't have faith. So don't try to make one of these decisions without the other two. You need to make all three of them. This lifestyle of the Word, faith and love keeps you in a place of resistance to the devil!

I suggest you get alone with God and pray:

In the Name of Jesus, I commit myself from this day forward to live by the Word of God, to live by my faith, and to live by the love of God.

Decide today to give the devil no place!

Scripture Study: John 15:7-12

The Body Sculptress says, "I hear from people all the time that say, 'I am failing again. I started out strongly and then I stopped exercising and I am so depressed again.' What happened? They chose to fall victim to Satan's lies that barrage them. Lies like, "You will never lose weight. You are too far gone. The exercise is killing you. You can't survive on this food. You can't survive another minute without a cookie. Why don't you call your friend and invite her out for cake and coffee?" and more...

Remember this: You are strong in HIM! You can win ANY battle. You must, however, decide that you will fight it. Nothing good is gained easily, is it? But with time what once was hard becomes easy enough, doesn't it?

You CAN DO IT and HE WILL HELP. Just decide to take one day at a time and never give up. As long as you continue making more good choices than bad choices over the course of a week, you are moving in the right direction. Don't believe the lies. Get going again today!"

Recognizing Stroke Symptoms

Published by "The South Beach Diet"

It takes the average person 13 hours to recognize the seriousness of stroke symptoms and get to a hospital. During this time, the brain suffers irreparable and otherwise treatable damage. Why does it take so long for someone to seek out medical attention for such a serious illness? Some people wait to report strokes because they believe them to be untreatable, while others simply don't know how to recognize the symptoms. According to the National Stroke Association, the five most common and recognizable stroke symptoms include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or inability to understand others
  • Sudden trouble seeing from one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Stroke symptoms should not be taken lightly. If you experience or see someone else experiencing one of these symptoms (even if it goes away quickly), call 911 immediately. Learning to recognize these symptoms may save your life or the life of someone you love. For more information, visit the Web site of the National Stroke Association.

Meet Adele Fine

When you're 57 and you have a significant other, it's not the big things that satisfy so much as the small victories against aging, angst, and all manner of fears and anxieties that you were too dumb or inexperienced to notice when you were young.

Since beginning to work with The Body Sculptress, my new muscles and leaner body give me a sense of turning back the clock, cheating on those love handles without remorse, and feeling as though I could lift my new car. Don't worry, Angela, I haven't tried it, and I wouldn't recommend that for anyone.

Now when I go out to play golf, I'm not stiff and sore, and I am hitting the ball better than I have in years. And don't I love it when people tell me that I need to GAIN weight! Ha! When everything you hear and read is about the obesity explosion in this country, I am proud to not be a part of that army of overstuffed caricatures of their former selves.

All that being said, I would still be tangoing with my love handles had it not been for The Body Scultpress. Angela provides structure and discipline, and RESULTS! And she inspires you to do more than you could or would do on your own, and she does it with a smile, and by looking so great herself that she is a silent inspiration every day.

Magnesium and Diabetes

Published By The HSI Institute

Researchers at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago examined data taken from nine years of clinical evaluations conducted on 824 men and women over the age of 55. Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed in 127 subjects, while 151 subjects developed Alzheimer's disease. (If this total of Alzheimer's cases seems high, it is. In fact, it's more than 5 percent higher than the norm for this age group.)

Among those who developed Alzheimer's, 31 also had diabetes.

Overall, patients with diabetes were found to have a 65 percent increased risk of AD. In addition, diabetes was associated with a significantly higher rate of decline in perceptual speed.

In an interview with the Associated Press, William Thies, the vice president for medical and scientific affairs for the Alzheimer's Association, noted that this long-term study is among the first to track diabetes parallel to the progression of Alzheimer's in subjects with no signs of the disease at the outset.

What the study doesn't reveal is why there may be a connection between diabetes and AD. Some researchers believe that high glucose levels may play a role in the abnormal processing of a protein that prompts the accumulation of peptide tangles - typical to Alzheimer's - that can destroy brain cells.

The magnesium factor

In the e-Alert "Sweet Tooth" (11/3/03), I told you about a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Study that revealed a clear association between low serum magnesium levels and an elevated risk of type 2 diabetes. Now a new study, from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School (BWH), has confirmed the magnesium/diabetes connection.

Researchers evaluated data from Women's Health Study food frequency questionnaires completed by more than 39,000 women over a period of six years. The BWH team also measured insulin levels in 349 of the subjects to examine the relationship of magnesium intake to insulin.

Analysis of the combined data showed a significant association between elevated levels of magnesium and a reduced risk of diabetes. And among women with adequate magnesium levels who were also overweight, diabetes risk was more than 20 percent lower when compared to overweight women with low magnesium.

Mineral most wanted

In addition to the many good reasons to avoid type 2 diabetes, there are also many good reasons to keep your magnesium levels high.

In e-Alerts and HSI Members Alerts we've told you about the wide range of magnesium benefits, including the promotion of bone health and prevention of heart disease. Fortunately magnesium is easy to get from dietary sources such as leafy green vegetables, nuts and whole grains.

The down side: Many factors contribute to magnesium depletion. High stress and menstruation can take their toll on magnesium levels, while a heavy intake of starches, alcohol, diuretics and some prescription drugs (such as antibiotics) can increase urinary excretion of magnesium.

If a blood test shows your magnesium levels to be low (a normal range is anywhere between .66 and 1.23 millimoles per liter), HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., recommends 500 mg supplement of magnesium per day, with the added note that magnesium gluconate and chelated magnesium are the preferred forms to look for.

In order to live long and healthy, we must really work at it. We have to be focused and provide the proper nutrition and exercise to our bodies. Proper nutrition is not only food that looks and tastes good. Food and drinks that have a lot of nutrients will not only help deter chronic diseases and keep you looking good, but will also fill you up. Here are some ideas and ways to make sure that you get the vital nutrients in the foods you should eat:

Cellular damage: This is prevented by antioxidants (almonds, berries, citrus, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers)

Super nutrient: Calcium (Low fat dairy, broccoli, legumes)

Lowering cholesterol: Fiber (bran, whole grains, whole fruits, vegetables, beans)

Feeling fatigue: Water (we don’t get enough, this is a vital nutrient, watermelon, pickles, oranges, lettuce, tomatoes)
